Engadine Uncials and Scraffiti
Experience: Uncials

 

The southern Alps of Switzerland called Engadine, has been part of the Roman Empire since 15 B.C.It is at that time the the Roman alphabet was introduced to the people of the region and it developed into different styles of writing as the centuries passed. From the 3rd century a new style of Uncials was adopted and has been used until the present time. We will start from Choir, the Capital of the canton of Graubunden and explore different styles of uncial inscriptions and decorations popular in this region.

Material to bring: all calligraphy tools black and white gouache, compass, graph paper, curved ruler and templates for oval frames.
